Browser support in Pivotal Tracker

Dan Podsedly
Wednesday, March 6, 2013

As we recently wrote, 2013 will see major improvements to Pivotal Tracker, on a rebuilt foundation (including a brand new API), followed by major new features and an updated design.

We can’t wait to get all this into your hands quickly, and continuously improve Tracker based on your feedback. As we all know, though, making web applications work well in all of the web browsers out there can be extremely time consuming, even impossible in some cases. In order to focus our energy on product improvements, and take advantage of modern open source technologies, we will be limiting “official” support to recently released versions of the most commonly used web browsers, specifically:

  • Google Chrome (version 22 and above)
  • Mozilla Firefox (version 17 and above)
  • Apple Safari (version 6)
  • Internet Explorer (version 9 and 10)

The good news is that most of you are already using these modern browsers.

Tracker will likely work reasonably well in other types of browsers, or older versions of the above, but you will soon see an unsupported browser warning in Tracker, and may run into issues, including slower performance. Hopefully upgrading to one of the supported browsers above is not too much of an inconvenience.

If you’re limited to using an on older version of Internet Explorer, we recommend installing the Google Chrome Frame plugin, for much better compatibility with modern sites and web applications.

We will be gradually rolling out under-the-hood modernizations over the next few weeks, and getting started on the first batch of new features. Stay tuned!

Excellent news! I’m glad to hear that IE 7 and 8 will soon not be supported. Can’t wait!
[supporting stupid/bad tech only perpetuates it - help kill the bad browsers and stop supporting early editions of IE]

I’m supportive and jealous! We’ve got too many clients still on IE7 and IE8. We’d have a mutiny if we dropped official support for them. It’d sure be nice to though.

    Hi,

I am very much happy with the changes but I am a bit disappointed with no-support for old IE versions. Ok, they are bad, they are not functioning but they are the most used browsers. And It’s not easy for many big companies to change the decision about IE version very quickly… (Which I am in a position that I am not able to force my big clients…)

I would suppose that at least a workable version promoted by pivotal tracker with less functionality such as “No Drag-Drop” or “No Auto-Update…”

I like Pivotal tracker very much but if this is the situation I need to look for another tool :(

    Regards,
    Osman Akdemir.
