Socialitis is an internal project that grew out of the observation that many of our start-up clients needed to build the same non-differentiating features; user management, friends/contacts, activity feeds, on-site messaging, etc. Further, focussing on these features was costing them money and time to market while shifting focus away from differentiating functionality.
Socialitis aims to give web start-ups a turbo-boost by creating a suite of pluggable commodity features with sensible user interactions that can be dropped in (a la carte) around our clients' unique product features. We can then take advantage of Ruby's super-flexibility to customize anything and everything once the core features are killer.
For you geeks: Socialitis is built on top of Ruby on Rails, though we've written our own class loader (Desert) which gives us a little more flexibility than the default class loader provides. This allows our features (plugins) to provide routes, migrations, specify dependencies, and compose classes (e.g the Groups plugin can add a .member_of?(group) method to the User class).
