A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.

Get it done. Make it work, then make it sing. Pivotal Labs seeks a highly specialized generalist to make things work.
Can you teach my mom to finally make her VCR stop blinking 12:00 and then pair with me to make wifi coverage great? We want to meet you. Is discovering something you don’t know exciting? Awesome. We’ll teach it to you, or learn it with you.
What does Pivotal do? We’re transforming the way the world builds software. We’re building Pivotal One to let everyone, from big to small, create great stuff. Pivotal Labs helps folks code their dreams.
What does Pivotal IT do? If it turns on and off, it’s ours. We keep things working so that everyone else can focus on what they do best. We value personal communication over documentation, time over money, and good enough today over perfect next week. We pair to share what we know. Got it well in hand? Get it done.
What do we need from you? Formerly Xtreme Labs, Pivotal Labs Toronto is our headquarters in Canada. We’ve been growing fast and just moved in to new digs at 1 Toronto Street. You’ll help us keep things running smoothly. Your job will become as big as you make it. The prime directive is: do the right thing, do what works, and be kind. We want you to help us do that.
What do we work with? We’re primarily an Apple shop, but some people use Windows or Linux instead of our lovely Macs. If you aren’t familiar with all three, we’ll teach you. We deal with mobile of every stripe. As few printers as possible. We love Google Apps and Zendesk. We keep as many services hosted as we can. You’ll help us tame our cool toys and learn to work with the good stuff like Casper Suite, OS X Server, and Ruckus enterprise wifi, but you don’t need to be familiar with any of that now.
Here are some requests we’ve gotten recently:
Set up an iPad mini with LTE
Help a designer use Dropbox to share assets with clients
Get a batch of new high-spec iMacs inventoried, imaged, and out on the floor
Tune up HDMI connections in our conference rooms
Help us find the best keyboard for knocking out code
What’s a typical day look like? Hot breakfast shows up at 8:45. After we eat, we get together for a chat on what’s happening that day. We all stand up to keep it quick. Once you hit your desk, you’ll take a look at the help requests that came in that morning. After that, it’s up to you and the team. What looks important? What do you want to work on alone? What do you want to pair with one of the other team members on? What do you want to kick up to someone else? You have a lot of latitude in deciding how to do your job. If you work here, we trust you.
Do you hear a scary sound and run toward it? Talk to us.
